Green Algae and Bubble Gum Wars is the thirteenth book in the Beacon Street Girls series. The books are published by Aladdin MIX, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, and illustrated by Monica Roe. The books are written by "Annie Bryant," which is a pen name for a group of authors who work for B*tween Productions, which produces the Beacon Street Girls line.
The book mainly focuses on Abigail Adams Junior High (AAJH)'s enviormmental science fair. Maeve's tutor, Matt, invites her and her friends to the Sally Ride Science Festival. Maeve is reluctant to go, but all the BSG end up having fun and managing to get their so called "romance project," Avery and Isabel's siblings, together. On the way back from the science fair, Avery has the idea to have an enviormmental science fair. The girls decide to call themselves the "Green Machine," and by using a petition, gets the school to rally around their idea. After the announcement, the girls busy themselves with their projects. Maeve, who was really interested in flowers at the science festival, is excited about working with her tutor Matt. Then she discovers Matt's friend Bailey, who led the exhibit on flowers, is really his girlfriend. Maeve, who had plans to get Matt to fall in love with her, is devastated. She and her mother have a talk about "dream-crushes", and she has fun with her project. Katani, meanwhile, wants to do something on electricity but is annoyed after Reggie DeWitt, aka "Math Boy" and her academic rival, starts spending lots of time at their house since Mr. Summers is an electrician and he's using electricity in his project. Katani hasn't forgiven him since he dumped her for the big math project in book twelve, "Times Up." But by the end of the book, she starts to develop feelings for him and even asks him to the Valentine's Day dance in the next book. Avery has her own issues, too. She wants to show how commercial gum is bad for the enviormment AND get the Queens of Means and Kiki Underwood, who have been giving out Tru Blu gum, to see how their gum affects the earth. She creates her own gum, which become very popular, but ends up having a slight flaw in her gum research, which leads to an argument with Katani. Avery wants to close the factory, but Mr. Summers has gotten a contract from the factory and is spending more time at home, so Katani wants it to stay open. Eventually, they make up and Katani says she preferrs Avery's gum instead of Tru Blu. At the science fair, Isabel and Avery get their siblings to tag along, but make up white lies that each of them has cooked up, and both of them end up being wrong. Eventually, though, the two make up and start dating in book sixteen. Altoegther, it's a bumpy ride for the BSG in Green Algae and Bubble Gum Wars!
